Model South Louisiana and you almost have to have a creosote pile bridge somewhere.  I decided to put on in between the Baton Rouge KCS Yard and the Exxon North Baton Rouge Refinery.  There are a couple of smaller pile bridges along that route in real life, but this will eventually be a full blown bayou, complete with cypress trees and Spanish moss.  And, cause I'm just that guy, it's named for my good friend Robert Bufkin (and old Navy man) who insisted in rather salty language that I needed a D__n Bayou on my layout somewhere.

The bridge is made of dowels and stripwood glued together with Walther's Goo stained with and india ink wash.  The front half has ME code 55 bridge track over most of it.  The retaining wall is a Fine N Scale product that's also stained with India Ink and weathered with some Tamaya weathering powders.  And yes, I know the piles don't go all the way down - the river bed needs to be modified as part of the finish work.  The alligator is from a set my kids have - its large for N scale but sets the scene nicely.

Dat der is dat big daddy gator.

Once you get some water down in there with some swamp growth he will not seem to be so big.  You need him chasing an occupied pirogue.  The kids who get to visit your layout will just love it.

Yeah dats some gator der, 'chere

He measures 27 feet long (!).  I do plan to find one or two more that are more appropriate to scale.  The pirogue chasing is but one great idea to make this a classic bayou scene.

Now to figure out how to make Spanish moss and water moccasins!

Job for Amos Moses

You need to get Amos Moses to knock that gator in the head with a tree stump.
